All India Radio, Kochi commenced operations as a Local Radio Station on 1st November 1989. It began with an evening transmission which in the late nineties was extended to morning and afternoon. Subsequently the non transmission hours in the morning was bridged and it became day long transmission with a break for one hour at 4. 00 pm. In 2006 the FM Rainbow Channel was launched.
Channels apart AIR Kochi is also umbrella to a branch unit of Commercial Broadcasting Service (CBS). It commenced operations in 2006 as Prasar Bharati Marketing Division branch office and was soon rechristened as Commercial Revenue Division along with other marketing divisions. Subsequently with the closure of many of the marketing units it transitioned as CBS branch office.
